The dark area in the center is filled with thick dusty clouds obscuring the glow from the surrounding nebula. This structure is considered an emission nebula because nearby massive hot stars are energizing the gas cloud causing them to glow in a variety of colors. The intense orange shade represents hydrogen gas and the soft blue is oxygen gas molecules. On the right side of the dark dusty region, you can find the Pelican Nebula and to its left, the North America Nebula…can you make out the shape of the North American continent? The Gulf of Mexico is the most obvious feature. Oh, and if you were considering a trip to this nebula at the speed of light, make sure to plan ahead because it would take you about 2,500 years to get there!
